나이와 돈

Numbers & Counters 2

Age uses a native number with 살, and money uses a Sino number with 원. The two sets sit side by side in daily life, so a shop price and your age never share a number set.

Numbers & Counters — Native and Sino-Korean numbers with their counters.

Lesson

살 for age, 원 for won

살 counts years of age and takes a native number: 열 살 (ten years old), 스무 살 (twenty). 원 is the Korean currency and takes Sino numbers: 천 원 (1,000 won), 오만 원 (50,000 won).

살 आयु के वर्ष गिनता है और मूल संख्या लेता है: 열 살 (दस वर्ष), 스무 살 (बीस)। 원 कोरियाई मुद्रा है और हान्जा संख्याएँ लेता है: 천 원 (1,000 वॉन), 오만 원 (50,000 वॉन)।

Number + 살 / Number + 원

Age: 열다섯 살, 스무 살, 서른 살. Money: 삼천 원, 오천 원, 만 원. Notice 서른 for thirty and 스무 for twenty - two native forms that shorten before 살.

आयु: 열다섯 살, 스무 살, 서른 살। पैसा: 삼천 원, 오천 원, 만 원। ध्यान दें कि तीस के लिए 서른 और बीस के लिए 스무 - 살 से पहले छोटे होने वाले दो मूल रूप।

Age and prices

저는 스무 살이에요 (I am twenty years old). 제 동생은 열세 살이에요 (My younger sibling is thirteen). 이 커피는 삼천 원이에요 (This coffee is 3,000 won). 이 책은 만 원이에요 (This book is 10,000 won).

저는 스무 살이에요 (मैं बीस वर्ष का हूँ)। 제 동생은 열세 살이에요 (मेरा छोटा भाई तेरह वर्ष का है)। 이 커피는 삼천 원이에요 (यह कॉफ़ी 3,000 वॉन की है)। 이 책은 만 원이에요 (यह किताब 10,000 वॉन की है)।

Mixing 살 and 원

Saying 이십 살 for age borrows the Sino set, and 천 살 for money borrows the native set. Age is always native with 살, money always Sino with 원. Keep the two apart.

आयु के लिए 이십 살 कहना हान्जा श्रृंखला उधार लेता है, और पैसे के लिए 천 살 कहना मूल श्रृंखला। आयु सदा मूल संख्या और 살 से, पैसा सदा हान्जा संख्या और 원 से। दोनों को अलग रखें।

Listen for the unit word

When you hear 살 you can expect a native number, and when you hear 원 expect Sino. The unit word at the end tells you which set the speaker just used, so latch onto it.

जब 살 सुनाई दे तो मूल संख्या की अपेक्षा करें, और जब 원 सुनाई दे तो हान्जा की। अंत में आने वाला इकाई-शब्द बताता है कि बोलने वाले ने कौन-सी श्रृंखला प्रयोग की, इसलिए उसे पकड़ें।

What TOPIK asks

TOPIK I reading often shows a price in a menu or receipt and asks how much something costs. Prices are Sino with 원, and the large numbers like 만 원 are the ones tested most.

TOPIK I पठन प्रायः मेन्यू या रसीद में दाम दिखाकर पूछता है कि किसी चीज़ की कीमत कितनी है। दाम हान्जा संख्या और 원 से होते हैं, और 만 원 जैसी बड़ी संख्याएँ सबसे ज़्यादा पूछी जाती हैं।
