연결 어미 -고 -서 -지만 -면

Sentence Structure 2

These endings attach to a verb stem and join two clauses inside one sentence: -고 (and), -서 (because), -지만 (but), -면 (if/when).

Sentence Structure — Word order, negation, questions and linking clauses.

Lesson

Ending sits on the first verb

The connector replaces the ending of the first clause and the sentence keeps going: 먹다 + -고 → 밥을 먹고 공부해요 (I eat and then study). Only the final verb closes the sentence.

संयोजक पहले उपवाक्य का अंत बदल देता है और वाक्य चलता रहता है: 먹다 + -고 → 밥을 먹고 공부해요 (मैं खाकर पढ़ता हूँ)। केवल अंतिम क्रिया वाक्य समाप्त करती है।

Four endings, one shape

-고 adds or sequences (먹고, 가고). -서 gives a cause (와서, 가서). -지만 contrasts (어렵지만). -면 states a condition (있으면, 오면). All attach directly to the stem.

-고 जोड़ता या क्रम बनाता है (먹고, 가고)। -서 कारण बताता है (와서, 가서)। -지만 विरोध दिखाता है (어렵지만)। -면 शर्त बताता है (있으면, 오면)। सभी सीधे तने से जुड़ते हैं।

Connectors in real sentences

비가 와서 집에 있었어요 (It rained, so I stayed home). 한국어는 어렵지만 재미있어요 (Korean is hard but fun). 시간이 있으면 같이 가요 (If you have time, let us go together).

비가 와서 집에 있었어요 (बारिश हुई, इसलिए मैं घर रहा)। 한국어는 어렵지만 재미있어요 (कोरियन कठिन है पर मज़ेदार)। 시간이 있으면 같이 가요 (यदि समय हो तो साथ चलें)।

One long sentence instead of two

Speakers prefer one connected sentence to two short ones: 어제 친구를 만나서 영화를 봤어요 (Yesterday I met a friend and watched a movie). The whole story rides on -서.

वक्ता दो छोटे वाक्यों की अपेक्षा एक जुड़ा वाक्य पसंद करते हैं: 어제 친구를 만나서 영화를 봤어요 (कल मैं मित्र से मिला और फ़िल्म देखी)। पूरी कहानी -서 पर टिकी है।

Marking tense twice

Do not put 았/었 on the first clause with -고 or -서: say 어제 밥을 먹고 잤어요, not 먹었고. Tense is marked once, on the final verb.

-고 या -서 वाले पहले उपवाक्य पर 았/었 न लगाएँ: 어제 밥을 먹고 잤어요 कहें, 먹었고 नहीं। काल एक ही बार, अंतिम क्रिया पर लगता है।

Choose the ending by the question

Ask what the second clause does to the first: add (고), explain (서), oppose (지만) or depend on a condition (면). The answer names the ending.

पूछें कि दूसरा उपवाक्य पहले के साथ क्या करता है: जोड़ता है (고), समझाता है (서), विरोध करता है (지만) या शर्त पर निर्भर है (면)। उत्तर ही अंत बताता है।

What TOPIK asks

TOPIK I sentence-completion items give the first clause and ask you to finish it with the right connector. The logical link, not the translation, decides the answer.

TOPIK I के वाक्य-पूर्ति प्रश्न पहला उपवाक्य देते हैं और सही संयोजक से उसे पूरा करने को कहते हैं। उत्तर तर्क तय करता है, अनुवाद नहीं।
