Sentence Structure 1
Conjunctions join two whole sentences and stand at the start of the second one: 그리고 (and), 하지만 (but), 그래서 (so), 또는 (or).
Sentence Structure — Word order, negation, questions and linking clauses.
Each conjunction begins a new sentence and carries the meaning of the link: 밥을 먹었어요. (I ate. And I drank coffee). Write the full stop first, then the conjunction.
그리고 = and (addition). 하지만 = but (contrast). 그래서 = so (result). 또는 = or (choice). Only the first three change the logic of the sentence; 또는 offers alternatives.
(It rained. So I stayed home). (It rained. But I went out). (I drink coffee or tea).
Koreans use 그리고 less than beginners expect; a small pause often replaces it. Save 그래서 and 하지만 for real cause and real contrast, so the listener notices them.
Around 비가 왔어요, the second sentence must agree with the conjunction: 그래서 for a fitting result, 하지만 for a surprising one. Swapping them makes the sentence illogical.
Before adding a conjunction, ask what the two sentences share. If the second explains the first, use 그래서; if it contradicts, use 하지만; if it simply adds, use 그리고.
TOPIK I blank items ask which conjunction fits the logic. Read the two sentences first, decide the relationship, then pick the conjunction that carries it.
