Numbers & Counters 1

Each kind of thing has its own counter: 장 for paper, 병 for bottles, 잔 for cups, 권 for books, 명 for people and 마리 for animals. The counter comes after the number.

Lesson

A counter for each kind

The counter tells the listener what class of thing is being counted. 장 (paper, tickets), 병 (bottles), 잔 (cups), 권 (books), 명 (people), 마리 (animals) and 그루 (trees) are the ones you meet first.

गणक सुनने वाले को बताता है कि किस वर्ग की वस्तु गिनी जा रही है। 장 (काग़ज़, टिकट), 병 (बोतलें), 잔 (प्याले), 권 (किताबें), 명 (व्यक्ति), 마리 (पशु) और 그루 (पेड़) सबसे पहले मिलते हैं।

Number + counter + noun

종이 한 장 (one sheet of paper), 물 두 병 (two bottles of water), 커피 세 잔 (three cups of coffee), 책 네 권 (four books). The counter follows the number and the whole unit precedes the noun.

종이 한 장 (काग़ज़ की एक शीट), 물 두 병 (पानी की दो बोतलें), 커피 세 잔 (तीन प्याले कॉफ़ी), 책 네 권 (चार किताबें)। गणक संख्या के बाद आता है और पूरी इकाई संज्ञा से पहले।

Counters in a shop

물 두 병 주세요 (Two bottles of water, please). 커피 한 잔 마셨어요 (I drank one cup of coffee). 책 세 권을 빌렸어요 (I borrowed three books). 종이 다섯 장이 있어요 (There are five sheets of paper).

물 두 병 주세요 (दो बोतल पानी दीजिए)। 커피 한 잔 마셨어요 (मैंने एक प्याला कॉफ़ी पी)। 책 세 권을 빌렸어요 (मैंने तीन किताबें उधार लीं)। 종이 다섯 장이 있어요 (काग़ज़ की पाँच शीट हैं)।

Using 개 for everything

개 is a fallback, but 책 한 개 sounds careless; books take 권. Bottles take 병, not 개. Learn the specific counter for the things you talk about most.

개 एक सामान्य विकल्प है, पर 책 한 개 लापरवाह लगता है; किताबों का गणक 권 है। बोतलों का गणक 병 है, 개 नहीं। जिन चीज़ों की बात आप सबसे ज़्यादा करते हैं उनका विशेष गणक सीखें।

Counter attaches to the number

Think of the number and counter as one word: 한잔, 두병, 세권. Saying them as a single unit makes the pairing automatic and stops you inserting a particle in the middle.

संख्या और गणक को एक शब्द मानें: 한잔, 두병, 세권। इन्हें एक इकाई की तरह बोलने से जोड़ी स्वाभाविक हो जाती है और बीच में कण घुसाने की गलती रुक जाती है।
