을/를

Particles 1

을/를 marks the object: the thing a verb acts on. Use 을 after a batchim and 를 after a vowel.

Particles — 은/는, 이/가, 을/를, 에/에서 and the rest of the particle system.

Lesson

The object marker

The noun a transitive verb acts on takes 을/를: 밥을 먹어요 (I eat a meal). The verb comes LAST in the sentence; the object goes just before it.

जिस संज्ञा पर सकर्मक क्रिया होती है, उसके साथ 을/를 लगता है: 밥을 먹어요 (मैं भोजन खाता हूँ)। वाक्य में क्रिया अंत में आती है; कर्म उसके ठीक पहले आता है।

Batchim decides 을 or 를

밥 ends in the batchim ㅂ, so 밥을. 커피 ends in a vowel, so 커피를. The choice is purely mechanical - there is no meaning difference.

밥 ㅂ बतचिम पर समाप्त होता है, इसलिए 밥을। 커피 स्वर पर समाप्त होता है, इसलिए 커피를। यह चुनाव पूरी तरह यांत्रिक है - अर्थ में कोई अंतर नहीं।

Everyday objects

물을 마셔요 (I drink water). 한국어를 공부해요 (I study Korean). 책을 읽어요 (I read a book).

물을 마셔요 (मैं पानी पीता हूँ)। 한국어를 공부해요 (मैं कोरियन पढ़ता हूँ)। 책을 읽어요 (मैं किताब पढ़ता हूँ)।

Dropping the object marker

In fast speech Koreans often drop 을/를, so learners copy that and drop it everywhere. In a written TOPIK answer keep the particle; dropping it can make the sentence ambiguous.

तेज़ बोली में कोरियन लोग प्रायः 을/를 छोड़ देते हैं, इसलिए शिक्षार्थी उसे हर जगह छोड़ने लगते हैं। लिखित TOPIK उत्तर में कण रखें; छोड़ने से वाक्य अस्पष्ट हो सकता है।

Object before verb, always

Korean word order is Subject - Object - Verb. English says "I eat rice"; Korean says 나는 밥을 먹어요 with the verb anchored at the end.

कोरियन शब्द-क्रम कर्ता - कर्म - क्रिया है। अंग्रेज़ी में क्रिया कर्म से पहले आती है; कोरियन कहता है 나는 밥을 먹어요 जिसमें क्रिया अंत में रहती है।
