과/와, 하고

Particles 1

To join two nouns with "and", use 과 after a batchim, 와 after a vowel, or 하고 for any noun in everyday speech.

Particles — 은/는, 이/가, 을/를, 에/에서 and the rest of the particle system.

Lesson

Nouns only

과/와 joins two nouns inside one phrase: 사과와 바나나 (an apple and a banana). It cannot join two whole sentences; for that Korean uses the verb ending -고. 하고 is a casual twin of 와/과.

과/와 एक ही वाक्यांश में दो संज्ञाओं को जोड़ता है: 사과와 바나나 (सेब और केला)। यह दो पूरे वाक्यों को नहीं जोड़ सकता; उसके लिए कोरियन क्रिया-अंत -고 का प्रयोग करता है। 하고 와/과 का अनौपचारिक रूप है।

Batchim picks 과 or 와

책 + 과 = 책과, 사과 + 와 = 사과와. 하고 never changes: 책하고, 사과하고. Whichever you pick, the noun after it usually carries 은/는 or 을/를.

책 + 과 = 책과, 사과 + 와 = 사과와। 하고 कभी नहीं बदलता: 책하고, 사과하고। जो भी चुनें, उसके बाद की संज्ञा के साथ प्रायः 은/는 या 을/를 आता है।

Shopping and friends

사과와 바나나를 샀어요 (I bought apples and bananas). 책과 공책이 책상 위에 있어요 (A book and a notebook are on the desk). 친구하고 영화를 봤어요 (I watched a film with a friend). 빵하고 우유를 주세요 (Please give me bread and milk).

사과와 바나나를 샀어요 (मैंने सेब और केले खरीदे)। 책과 공책이 책상 위에 있어요 (मेज़ पर एक किताब और एक कॉपी है)। 친구하고 영화를 봤어요 (मैंने मित्र के साथ फ़िल्म देखी)। 빵하고 우유를 주세요 (कृपया मुझे ब्रेड और दूध दीजिए)।

Joining sentences with 와/과

밥을 먹었어요 와 갔어요 is wrong because 와/과 works only between nouns. To link actions, use the verb ending: 밥을 먹고 갔어요 (I ate and then went). Keep 와/과 for lists.

밥을 먹었어요 와 갔어요 गलत है क्योंकि 와/과 केवल संज्ञाओं के बीच काम करता है। क्रियाओं को जोड़ने के लिए क्रिया-अंत लगाएँ: 밥을 먹고 갔어요 (मैं खाकर गया)। सूचियों के लिए 와/과 रखें।

하고 is safe to speak

If you are unsure whether a noun ends in a batchim, use 하고: it fits both and is perfectly natural in conversation. Reserve 와/과 for writing and formal speech.

यदि आपको संदेह हो कि संज्ञा बतचिम पर समाप्त होती है या नहीं, तो 하고 लगाएँ: यह दोनों के साथ फिट बैठता है और बोलचाल में पूरी तरह स्वाभाविक है। लेखन और औपचारिक भाषण के लिए 와/과 रखें।

Lists in reading passages

Reading passages often list items with 와/과. Spot the last noun before the verb to see where the list ends and where the object particle 을/를 attaches.

गद्यांशों में प्रायः वस्तुओं की सूची 와/과 के साथ होती है। क्रिया से पहले की अंतिम संज्ञा देखें ताकि पता चले कि सूची कहाँ खत्म होती है और कर्म-कण 을/를 कहाँ लगता है।
