Speech Levels & Honorifics 5
In an indirect quotation the honorific stays inside the quoted clause: 선생님께서 오시라고 하셨어요. The verb of saying also takes -시- when the speaker is respected, but the honorific in the quote must not be dropped.
Speech Levels & Honorifics — 해요체, 합니다체, 반말 and the honorific 시.
An indirect quotation reports what someone said without repeating the exact words. When the original speaker or the subject is respected, keep -시- inside the quoted clause: 오시라고, 하시냐고, 가시자고. The reporting verb 하다 also becomes 하시다 if the person who spoke is respected.
With a final consonant:
(The teacher said to come early tomorrow.) 부장님이 회의에 참석하시냐고 물으셨어요. (The manager asked whether you would attend the meeting.) 할머니께서 같이 가시자고 하셨어요. (Grandmother suggested going together.) 사장님이 기다리시라고 하셨습니다. (The president said to wait.)
At work you relay the instruction of a superior: 부장님께서 자료를 다시 확인하시라고 하셨어요 (The manager asked you to check the materials again). When you are unsure who spoke, use the plain quote and then add the honorific only if the subject is respected. In email, report with -시라고 전달드렸습니다.
कार्यालय में आप वरिष्ठ का निर्देश आगे बताते हैं: 부장님께서 자료를 다시 확인하시라고 하셨어요 (प्रबंधक ने कहा कि सामग्री फिर जाँचिए)। यदि संदेह हो कि किसने कहा, तो साधारण उद्धरण लगाएँ और आदरसूचकता तभी जोड़ें जब कर्ता आदरणीय हो। ईमेल में -시라고 전달드렸습니다 के साथ सूचना दें।
Do not say 선생님께서 오라고 하셨어요 when the teacher is the one who should come; use 오시라고. Do not put the honorific only on 하다: 오라고 하셨어요 honors the speaker but not the person in the quote. Do not use -시- when the quoted subject is yourself: 제가 가시라고 했어요 is wrong.
जब शिक्षक को ही आना हो तो 선생님께서 오라고 하셨어요 न कहें; 오시라고 लगाएँ। आदरसूचकता केवल 하다 पर न लगाएँ: 오라고 하셨어요 कहने वाले का आदर करता है, उद्धरण के व्यक्ति का नहीं। जब उद्धृत कर्ता आप स्वयं हों तो -시- न लगाएँ: 제가 가시라고 했어요 गलत है।
First find the original speaker, then the subject of the quoted verb. If either is a superior, the matching verb takes -시-. The reporting 하다 takes -시- for the speaker; the quoted verb takes -시- for its own subject. Both can appear in one sentence.
पहले मूल वक्ता खोजें, फिर उद्धृत क्रिया का कर्ता। यदि इनमें से कोई वरिष्ठ हो तो संबंधित क्रिया पर -시- लगता है। बताने वाली 하다 वक्ता के लिए -시- लेती है; उद्धृत क्रिया अपने कर्ता के लिए -시- लेती है। दोनों एक ही वाक्य में आ सकते हैं।
TOPIK II reading often asks what a superior requested. The quote ending tells you the function: -(으)시라고 is a command, -시냐고 is a question, -(으)시자고 is a suggestion. Match the ending to the reported action, then check the honorific.
Answer:
Answer: 읽으시라
💡 받침이 있으므로 ‘-으시라고’가 붙어 ‘읽으시라고’가 됩니다.
Q3. 직접 인용을 간접 인용으로 바꾸십시오: 할머니께서 “같이 가자.” → 할머니께서 같이 ( )고 하셨어요.
प्रत्यक्ष उद्धरण को अप्रत्यक्ष उद्धरण में बदलिए: 할머니께서 “같이 가자.” → 할머니께서 같이 ( )고 하셨어요।
Answer: 가시자
💡 제안을 나타내는 높임 간접 인용은 ‘-(으)시자고 하다’입니다. 따라서 ‘가시자고’가 됩니다.
