Lesson

Asking and suggesting with respect

-(으)시겠어요 is a polite question about the intention or preference of the listener: 커피 드시겠어요? (Would you like coffee?). -(으)시죠 is a gentle suggestion that includes the listener: 여기 앉으시죠 (Please sit here). Both honor the listener with -시- and are softer than a bare command.

With a final consonant: The ㄹ drops before 시: 살다 → 사시겠어요, 사시죠. Never attach 시 to your own action.

Offers and soft suggestions

(Would you like some tea?) (Would you like to leave now?) (Please close the window.) (Please come again tomorrow.) (Please go in first, you two.)

Office and shop

In a meeting: 잠시 쉬시겠어요? (Shall we take a short break?). In a shop: 봉투에 넣어 드릴까요? is the humble offer, while 포장하시겠어요? asks about the choice of the customer. At a restaurant: 자리에 앉으시죠. The suggestion form is common when a host guides a guest.

Honorific on the wrong subject

Do not use -시- for yourself: 제가 가시겠어요 is wrong; say 제가 갈게요. Do not use -(으)시죠 as a hard order to a superior; it can sound presumptuous. Do not attach 시 twice: 가시시겠어요 is wrong. -(으)시겠어요 asks, while -(으)시죠 suggests; do not swap them in a question about the wish of the listener.

Choose by the role of the other person

If you want to know the wish of the listener, use -(으)시겠어요. If you want to guide or invite, use -(으)시죠. For a service offer where you act, use -(으)ㄹ까요 with 드리다: 도와드릴까요? The honorific stays on the action of the listener, not on yours.

TOPIK II listening

Listening dialogues use these forms to signal the relationship. -(으)시겠어요 from a clerk to a customer is an offer; -(으)시죠 from a host to a guest is an invitation. The answer options usually differ in who is supposed to act, so identify the subject before choosing.
