Numbers & Counters 3
Korean has native ordinals 첫째, 둘째, 셋째 and Sino-Korean ordinals 제1, 제2. Native ordinals suit lists and turns, while 제 plus a number suits chapters, rounds, floors and official order.
Numbers & Counters — Native and Sino-Korean numbers with their counters.
Native ordinals are 첫째, 둘째, 셋째, 넷째, 다섯째 and so on. Sino-Korean ordinals put 제 before the number: 제1, 제2, 제3, read 제일, 제이 and 제삼. 첫째 and 첫 번째 are close, but 첫째 is more formal in a list and 첫 번째 is common in speech.
Official order: 제1장 (chapter one), 제2차 (the second round), 제3과 (lesson three), 제1회 (the first time). In speech: 첫 번째, 두 번째 and 세 번째.
하나 → 첫째, 둘 → 둘째, 셋 → 셋째, 넷 → 넷째, 다섯 → 다섯째, 열 → 열째। आधिकारिक क्रम: 제1장 (पहला अध्याय), 제2차 (दूसरा दौर), 제3과 (तीसरा पाठ), 제1회 (पहली बार)। बोलचाल में: 첫 번째, 두 번째 और 세 번째।
첫째, 준비물을 확인하세요. (First, check your supplies.) 둘째, 시간을 지켜 주세요. (Second, please be on time.) 이 책의 제3장을 읽으세요. (Read chapter three of this book.) 제2차 회의는 다음 주에 열립니다. (The second meeting will be held next week.) 그는 첫 번째로 발표했어요. (He presented first.)
An elevator button says 지하 1층 and 1층, not 첫째 층. A race result says 첫째, 둘째, 셋째. An anniversary says 제10주년. In a classroom the teacher says 제1과부터 시작합니다 (We start from lesson one). For a birthday, 첫째 생일 is unusual; say 첫 번째 생일 or 돌 for the first birthday.
Do not say 일째 for first; the native form is 첫째. Do not add 제 to a native ordinal: 제첫째 is wrong. Do not confuse 제일 meaning number one with 제일 meaning most: 제일 좋아요 means I like it most, while 제1과 means lesson one. In speech use 번째 after native numbers, not after Sino numbers.
Use 첫째, 둘째 and 셋째 for a spoken or written list of points. Use 제1, 제2 for official names: chapters, competitions, meetings, laws. For dates and floors Korean normally uses cardinal numbers, so 3월 5일 is 삼월 오일, not 셋째 달 다섯째 날.
बोले या लिखे गए बिंदुओं की सूची के लिए 첫째, 둘째 और 셋째 लगाएँ। आधिकारिक नामों के लिए 제1, 제2 लगाएँ: अध्याय, प्रतियोगिता, बैठक, कानून। तारीख और मंज़िल के लिए कोरियन सामान्यतः मूल संख्याएँ लगाती है, इसलिए 3월 5일 삼월 오일 है, 셋째 달 다섯째 날 नहीं।
TOPIK II listening may ask the order of steps. The options use 첫째, 둘째, 셋째 or 첫 번째, 두 번째. Read the verbs in each step and match the order word; a distractor often swaps 둘째 and 셋째. In reading, 제1 and 제2 in a title signal a sequence of official events.
टॉपिक द्वितीय सुनने में चरणों का क्रम पूछा जा सकता है। विकल्पों में 첫째, 둘째, 셋째 या 첫 번째, 두 번째 आते हैं। हर चरण की क्रिया पढ़कर क्रम-शब्द मिलाएँ; गलत विकल्प अक्सर 둘째 और 셋째 बदल देता है। पठन में शीर्षक के 제1, 제2 आधिकारिक घटनाओं का क्रम बताते हैं।
