Speech Levels & Honorifics 2
To ask someone to do something politely, use -(으)세요 or the softer -아/어 주세요. The longer form is gentler and is the everyday way to ask for a favour.
Speech Levels & Honorifics — 해요체, 합니다체, 반말 and the honorific 시.
가다 -> 가세요 (Please go). 앉다 -> 앉으세요 (Please sit). For please do X for me, use the stem + 아/어 주세요: 도와 주세요 (Please help me).
가다 -> 가세요 (कृपया जाइए)। 앉다 -> 앉으세요 (कृपया बैठिए)। मेरे लिए यह कीजिए के लिए तना + 아/어 주세요 लगाएँ: 도와 주세요 (कृपया मेरी सहायता कीजिए)।
도와 주세요 is polite; 도와 주시겠어요? is softer, and 도와 주시겠습니까? is the most formal. Adding -겠- moves the request into a careful offer.
도와 주세요 विनम्र है; 도와 주시겠어요? अधिक सौम्य है, और 도와 주시겠습니까? सबसे औपचारिक है। -겠- जोड़ने से अनुरोध सतर्क प्रस्ताव बन जाता है।
여기 앉으세요 (Please sit here). 문을 닫아 주세요 (Please close the door). 천천히 말해 주세요 (Please speak slowly).
여기 앉으세요 (कृपया यहाँ बैठिए)। 문을 닫아 주세요 (कृपया दरवाज़ा बंद कीजिए)। 천천히 말해 주세요 (कृपया धीरे बोलिए)।
A bare stem sounds like a command: 닫아 is rude to an adult. Add 주세요 or 세요 to soften it. Only 반말 with a close friend allows the bare form.
सिर्फ तना आदेश जैसा लगता है: बड़े व्यक्ति से 닫아 कहना असभ्य है। उसे सौम्य करने के लिए 주세요 या 세요 जोड़ें। केवल घनिष्ठ मित्र के साथ 반말 में तना अकेला चलता है।
After a request is done, 감사합니다 or 고마워요 closes the exchange. A short thanks makes the polite form sound sincere rather than routine.
