How to read this passage

This is a short self-introduction: a greeting, a name, a nationality and a study goal. Read it in order and note which sentence gives personal information.

यह एक छोटा आत्म-परिचय है: अभिवादन, नाम, राष्ट्रीयता और अध्ययन का लक्ष्य। इसे क्रम से पढ़ें और देखें कि कौन-सा वाक्य व्यक्तिगत जानकारी देता है।

The passage

안녕하세요. 저는 리아입니다. 저는 인도에서 왔습니다. 저는 한국어를 공부합니다.

English: Hello. I am Ria. I came from India. I study Korean.

안녕하세요. 저는 리아입니다. 저는 인도에서 왔습니다. 저는 한국어를 공부합니다. हिंदी: नमस्ते। मैं रिया हूँ। मैं भारत से आई हूँ। मैं कोरियाई भाषा पढ़ती हूँ।

Where you meet this text

You meet this text in a language-class profile, a first message to a Korean friend, or the opening of a self-introduction video.

यह पाठ भाषा-कक्षा की प्रोफ़ाइल, कोरियाई मित्र को पहले संदेश या आत्म-परिचय वीडियो के आरंभ में मिलता है।

Reading traps

Do not read 저는 as "I am" by itself; it means "as for me" and needs a predicate. Do not confuse 인도 사람 (a person from India) with 인도 (India). A name before 입니다 takes no particle.

‘저는’ को अकेले ‘मैं हूँ’ न पढ़ें; इसका अर्थ ‘मेरी बात में’ है और इसके बाद क्रिया आती है। ‘인도 사람’ (भारत से आया व्यक्ति) और ‘인도’ (भारत) में भ्रम न करें। ‘입니다’ से पहले नाम के साथ कण नहीं लगता।

Words and patterns to notice

Notice 저는, 입니다, 사람 and 공부합니다. The frame "저는 + noun + 입니다" and the verb 공부하다 cover most beginner introductions.

‘저는’, ‘입니다’, ‘사람’ और ‘공부합니다’ पर ध्यान दें। ‘저는 + संज्ञा + 입니다’ ढाँचा और ‘공부하다’ क्रिया अधिकांश शुरुआती आत्म-परिचय के लिए पर्याप्त हैं।

How TOPIK tests it

At TOPIK I this appears as a short reading with a name, nationality and job. The question usually asks who the person is or what they do, not for a paraphrase of every sentence.

टॉपिक प्रथम में यह नाम, राष्ट्रीयता और काम वाला छोटा पाठ होता है। प्रश्न प्रायः पूछता है कि व्यक्ति कौन है या क्या करता है, हर वाक्य का अर्थ नहीं।
