Numbers & Counters 2

The hour uses a native number with 시, and the minute uses a Sino number with 분. So two thirty is 두 시 삼십 분, mixing the two number sets in one phrase.

Numbers & Counters — Native and Sino-Korean numbers with their counters.

Lesson

Native for hours, Sino for minutes

The two halves of a time are built from different sets.

Order is hour first: 두 시 삼십 분 (2:30), 아홉 시 십오 분 (9:15). Half past is often half in native speech too: 두 시 반 (2:30).

Asking and giving the time

(What time is it now?). 지금 세 시 십오 분이에요 (It is 3:15 now). (I get up at seven).

Using Sino for the hour

Learners say 이 시 for two oclock because they used the Sino set. The hour must be native: 두 시. Only 분 takes the Sino forms, so 이 분 is fine but 이 시 is wrong.

Read the clock in two steps

Say the hour in native (세 시) and the minute in Sino (이십 분) as separate halves. Practising the halves apart stops the two sets from blurring together.

What TOPIK asks

TOPIK I listening often gives a time in a sentence and asks when something happens. Listen for 시 and 분, and note that native and Sino forms sound completely different.
