은/는과 이/가의 심화

Particles 2

In longer texts, 이/가 introduces new information the listener does not yet know, and 은/는 picks it up afterwards or draws a contrast.

Particles — 은/는, 이/가, 을/를, 에/에서 and the rest of the particle system.

Lesson

New information vs shared information

When a noun appears for the first time, mark it with 이/가: 예전에 한 친구가 있었어요 (Once there was a friend). The next time you mention it, use 은/는: 그 친구는 미국에 갔어요 (That friend went to America). 이/가 also answers "who?", while 은/는 sets up a contrast.

जब कोई संज्ञा पहली बार आती है तो उसके साथ 이/가 लगाएँ: 예전에 한 친구가 있었어요 (किसी समय एक मित्र था)। अगली बार उसका उल्लेख करने पर 은/는 लगाएँ: 그 친구는 미국에 갔어요 (वह मित्र अमेरिका चला गया)। 이/가 "कौन?" का उत्तर भी देता है, जबकि 은/는 विरोध तैयार करता है।

The contrast shape

To contrast two nouns, put 은/는 on both: 저는 커피는 마셔요, 차는 안 마셔요 (As for coffee I drink it; tea I do not). The second 은/는 can replace 을/를 so the contrast stands out.

दो संज्ञाओं में विरोध दिखाने के लिए दोनों पर 은/는 लगाएँ: 저는 커피는 마셔요, 차는 안 마셔요 (कॉफ़ी मैं पीता हूँ, चाय नहीं)। दूसरा 은/는 을/를 की जगह भी आ सकता है ताकि विरोध उभर आए।

A short story

옛날에 한 소녀가 살았어요 (Once a girl lived). 그 소녀는 꽃을 좋아했어요 (That girl liked flowers). 어느 날 꽃이 모두 사라졌어요 (One day all the flowers disappeared). 누가 그랬을까요? (Who did it?).

옛날에 한 소녀가 살았어요 (एक बार एक लड़की रहती थी)। 그 소녀는 꽃을 좋아했어요 (उस लड़की को फूल पसंद थे)। 어느 날 꽃이 모두 사라졌어요 (एक दिन सारे फूल गायब हो गए)। 누가 그랬을까요? (यह किसने किया?)।

Why it matters in a paragraph

Once a noun has been introduced, keep using 은/는 for it. Jumping back to 이/가 every sentence makes the paragraph sound like a list of new things instead of one connected story.

एक बार संज्ञा आ जाने पर उसके लिए 은/는 का प्रयोग जारी रखें। हर वाक्य में फिर से 이/가 पर लौटने से अनुच्छेद जुड़ी हुई कहानी के बजाय नई वस्तुओं की सूची जैसा लगता है।

Putting 이/가 on known information

After 그 소녀, writing 그 소녀가 again is odd in flowing text; the reader already knows her, so 그 소녀는 continues the topic. Save 이/가 for the moment the noun is new or for answering who or what.

그 소녀 के बाद लगातार पाठ में 그 소녀가 फिर लिखना अस्वाभाविक है; पाठक उसे पहले से जानता है, इसलिए 그 소녀는 विषय आगे बढ़ाता है। 이/가 उस क्षण के लिए रखें जब संज्ञा नई हो या "कौन" या "क्या" का उत्तर देना हो।

Ask what the reader already knows

Before choosing, ask: has this noun appeared yet? If no, use 이/가. If yes, use 은/는. If the sentence is correcting or contrasting, use 은/는 even on the first mention of a contrast pair.

चुनने से पहले पूछें: यह संज्ञा अभी आई है या नहीं? नहीं तो 이/가। हाँ तो 은/는। यदि वाक्य सुधार या विरोध कर रहा हो तो विरोध-जोड़ी के पहले उल्लेख पर भी 은/는।

Long reading sets

In TOPIK I reading, the particle choice in the first two lines usually tells you which noun is the topic. Follow that noun with 은/는 and expect the new nouns around it to take 이/가.

TOPIK I के पठन भाग में पहली दो पंक्तियों का कण-चुनाव प्रायः बताता है कि विषय कौन-सी संज्ञा है। उस संज्ञा के साथ 은/는 लेकर चलें और उसके आस-पास की नई संज्ञाओं के साथ 이/가 की अपेक्षा करें।
