TOPIK Preparation 5
Questions 45-50 ask what the passage implies, not what it says. The correct option is supported by the text but never copied from it, so the work is to eliminate options that are too broad, too absolute or off-topic.
TOPIK Preparation — TOPIK I and II format, scoring and strategy.
An inference item gives a short passage and asks what can be inferred, what the writer thinks, or what the purpose is. The correct option is a conclusion the passage supports; it is not a sentence copied from the passage. Items 45-50 of the reading section use this shape, and the passages grow longer towards item 50.
Step 1: read the question stem and mark the target (inference, attitude or purpose). Step 2: find the sentence that carries the writer’s judgement, usually after 그러나, 따라서 or 결국. Step 3: test each option against that sentence and reject any option the passage does not support.
The passage never says “do not look at your phone”, but the warning supports the inference that walking while looking at a phone is dangerous.
A library notice that says 다음 달부터 주말에도 문을 엽니다 is not only giving a date; it implies that weekend use was impossible before. Inference items borrow this everyday skill: the useful meaning is the change, not the calendar.
The strongest distractor is often true in the real world but absent from the passage. Another trap is an absolute option with 반드시, 모두 or 절대: inference answers are usually cautious. If an option needs outside knowledge, reject it.
그러나 and 하지만 mark a turn, 오히려 marks a correction, 따라서 and 결국 mark a conclusion, and 예를 들어 introduces support rather than the claim. Underline these words before you compare options; they usually sit in the sentence that decides the answer.
The last six reading items carry longer passages and abstract topics such as attitude, purpose and implication. Budget about two minutes each, answer the easier items 41-44 first if the clock is tight, and never leave a blank because there is no negative marking.
