어순

Sentence Structure 1

Korean puts the verb at the very end: Subject - Object - Verb. Particles, not position, tell you which noun is the subject and which is the object.

Sentence Structure — Word order, negation, questions and linking clauses.

Lesson

The verb goes last

English says "I eat rice". Korean says 나는 밥을 먹어요 — the verb 먹어요 (eat) is anchored at the end and never moves to the front.

अंग्रेज़ी में क्रिया कर्म से पहले आती है। कोरियन कहता है 나는 밥을 먹어요 — क्रिया 먹어요 (खाना) अंत में टिकी रहती है और कभी आगे नहीं आती।

Subject - Object - Verb

The plain order is Subject + Object + Verb: 나는 (subject) + 밥을 (object) + 먹어요 (verb). Time and place words slot in before the verb: 나는 아침에 밥을 먹어요.

सामान्य क्रम है कर्ता + कर्म + क्रिया: 나는 (कर्ता) + 밥을 (कर्म) + 먹어요 (क्रिया)। समय और स्थान के शब्द क्रिया से पहले आते हैं: 나는 아침에 밥을 먹어요।

Sentences every beginner meets

저는 한국어를 공부해요 (I study Korean). 동생이 물을 마셔요 (My younger sibling drinks water). 우리는 주말에 영화를 봐요 (We watch a movie at the weekend).

저는 한국어를 공부해요 (मैं कोरियन पढ़ता हूँ)। 동생이 물을 마셔요 (मेरा छोटा भाई पानी पीता है)। 우리는 주말에 영화를 봐요 (हम सप्ताहांत में फ़िल्म देखते हैं)।

The ending never moves

When you text a Korean friend, the reply always ends in the verb: 나 지금 밥 먹어 (I am eating now). Put the verb first and the sentence sounds like a broken question, or simply stops being Korean.

जब आप कोरियन मित्र को संदेश भेजते हैं तो उत्तर सदैव क्रिया पर समाप्त होता है: 나 지금 밥 먹어 (मैं अब खाना खा रहा हूँ)। क्रिया आगे रखें तो वाक्य टूटा हुआ प्रश्न लगता है या कोरियन ही नहीं रहता।

Keeping the English order

Learners write 나는 먹어요 밥을, copying English "I eat rice". In Korean the object must come before the verb, so it is 나는 밥을 먹어요. The verb is the last word in the sentence.

शिक्षार्थी अंग्रेज़ी के क्रम की नकल करते हुए 나는 먹어요 밥을 लिखते हैं। कोरियन में कर्म क्रिया से पहले आना चाहिए, इसलिए 나는 밥을 먹어요 सही है। क्रिया वाक्य का अंतिम शब्द होती है।

Find the verb, then build backwards

Read a Korean sentence from the end: spot the verb first, then ask "who?" (subject) and "what?" (object). This is faster than reading left to right with English expectations.

कोरियन वाक्य को अंत से पढ़ें: पहले क्रिया पहचानें, फिर पूछें "कौन?" (कर्ता) और "क्या?" (कर्म)। यह बाएँ-से-दाएँ पढ़ने की अंग्रेज़ी आदत से तेज़ है।
